Definition of a Cloud Based Phone System for Small Businesses

There seems to be no way that anyone can miss the bus to success when they choose to go with a cloud based phone system. This is mostly true, but the background scenario can have you gasping at the costs of buying, installing, maintaining and other concerns for a phone system in the cloud. You will also be daunted by the variety of systems, hardware and software currently available to build a phone based internet communications platform.

The cloud is simply another term for the internet. A cloud based IP phone system for small business in this article is interpreted as a number of phone units and related hardware like a PBX or VoIP installs in a network. The cloud part means the network can connect to the internet. This further means network owners are typically subscribed to a communication services provider with a phone application sitting on the cloud.

It is important for this article to delineate the subject of our title as precisely as can be done. The telecommunications markets are filled with this and that cloud PBX system. What is not usually said is that having such a system is not just a matter of finding one vendor, a quick install, and a smooth ride into internet based communications.

Problems One to Nth in Using the Cloud PBX Phone Systems for Business

You might run into unexpected problems with internet based phones if unprepared.

We will categorically state in the most polite terms that the available business phones for the cloud are virtually useless. Why do we say this? Because, in an industry where your telephony hardware is built by one manufacturer and handsets are built by someone else, problems are natural.

In fact, these problems multiply if not become exponential when you scale your network. More problems are attached to integrating old and new hardware and phone units. Still more problems arise if you get communications apps for your network.

There is (supposedly) a standard protocol to help users for the above concerns, but everyone seems to have different interpretations of how this works. (Read: almost every other company in the industry will tell you their own version of things.) The protocol that applies should ideally be the latest version of the Australian Government Cloud Computing Policy.

The gist of this policy, for consumers, is to have telcos and internet services provider ‘reduce costs, lift productivity and develop better services’. In actual practise, the problems stated above may be solved in actual terms by a team of experienced telephone and internet experts.

Yet even these might have problems with systems that have funny ways of doing things and never as good as a fully integrated, in-house cloud PBX system. That said, this in-house system, still in the most polite terms, is hard to run — for good reasons.

The most critical of these reasons are maintaining and updating a system which requires an on site tech to make changes. This takes more time and money, with no assurance of unlimited reliability.

Narrowing Down Your Options to the Best Deal Possible

The most current problem zone for business phone users is the NBN. Not that the optic fibre broadband network is not easy to use. Or that there are unsolvable or really expensive problems related to converting older phone systems to run on the broadband. The thing, again, is that there are so many problems that can arise because of what is available in the markets.

Our main concern here is for small to medium business customers. Candour Communications has looked far and wide for a manufacturer of cloud based business phones who both manufactures the best cloud based phone systems with cloud apps or IP Offices and handsets. Plus, this manufacturer should also provide the benefits of both an in-house system and one that operates in the cloud. Finally, this manufacturer should have a specific unit that has or does the following:

Add numbers to a company wide directory.

Access numbers in that directory and place a call.

Suppliers able to change the name on the handset remotely and at no cost.

Suppliers able to change the buttons around on a handset, again, at no cost.

Capacity to log in and out of call queues.

Manual night switch for a system.

Call routing to different handsets based on incoming caller ID.

Add different users with different privileges to make changes.

Call pickup for various groups of phones.

Can be used in hotdesking where any one phone can be used with different extension numbers.

Use an app on a mobile phone or PC to make and receive calls from the phone system.

Park a call or retrieve it from any phone just by pushing one button.

Our experience in the telecom industry is of such an extent that we could find no higher standards for small business phones as the above. And we’ve found only one manufacturer so far who can answer to these standards. Avaya is that manufacturer, and it is a long time leader in providing innovative unified communications systems in the cloud.

Just set up a demo with a supplier of the Avaya IP Office in the Cloud to see how it easily matches to all our ideal standards mentioned above. A cloud VoIP system is great for scaling in any direction and ideal for smaller businesses, too.

Deciding When to Turbo Boost Business to the Cloud

An important thing to remember before you hop into business communications in the cloud is timing. Telcos or hosted VoIP providers providing a pathway into internet phones will say, “Now!” but the poet in Ecclesiastes still has it right: there is a time and a season for everything.

First off, it will profit your business when you study your options well with regards to business phone use. Or, you could have a cloud system working for you right from the start. Business dimensions, office and location factors, your profession or your business field, capitalisation, NBN availability — all these can decide which way you go.

In our business, Candour Communications will help you not jump the gun. Although we also understand that the cloud is eventually where your business communications should be. If you are starting with an all new set of equipment, then there is no cause delaying getting into the cloud. This applies anywhere in Australia, although it will work best if NBN is available in your area.

A longer game should fit your business if it is already established or has already run some years on the track. You should also see how well you can integrate telecommuting or remote staff options with your phone system. This future is for real, and there are lots of companies offering remote or offshore online staffing services or employees preferring to telecommute. Here, you’ll find that Hosted PBX works in the same way as a cloud based system.

…Today the Cloud, Tomorrow Scale and Sustain

In essence, scaling is the direction which hosted VoIP providers in the cloud can take you. There are several ways of scaling:

Scaling back to streamline and remain fluid in the market.

Scaling forward at speed to access fast changing market standards and structures.

Scaling for resource conservation or sustainability — which means occasionally switching focus on products or services, types of audiences, and performance levels to support consumer trends that benefit all stakeholders and avoid market downturns.

This last is where we at Candour would like our customers to be involved in. Because, one, this is where the Avaya IP Office in the Cloud will be of greatest use. And second, well, the old brutal jockeying in marketplaces, cutthroat competition, territoriality, long time business (or even national) feuds and over the top sales campaigns are simply not going to work anymore.

Along with this maturation of mercantile values, the appearance and use of the internet is probably the most beneficent thing. The cloud is a space of unlimited space and possibilities and is spawning a culture of sharing, social responsibility, collaboration, respect for fellow businessmen, of getting more by giving back.

It has also helped businesses to understand the emotion-driven behaviour of consumers as never before and lets you avoid what Philip Salter calls “the complexity trap”.

With integrated online communications that enables multiple devises to work with hosted VoIP solutions, your phone system on the cloud provides stronger databases, more monitoring and business functions, and the ability to reach more people worldwide.

The Choice Scenario

So there you have it. For reasons discussed in this article, the choices for any cloud based telephony for smaller businesses can give you a package of problems. The one choice Candour Communications highly recommends does not, and gives you that smooth internet ride you would expect with something related to online space.

Avaya phones have that built in guarantee generally, and their latest in cloud telephone systems is the best. Of course, there are other phones who could come close. And because of Avaya’s IP Office phone system, other manufacturers may be coming up with compatible hardware sooner rather than later.

If for any reason your business wants to access a cloud PBX or VoIP solution to phone systems, don’t hesitate to give us a call. We have a good line of Avaya office phones for you and systems from the same company. We also feature other brands which excel for specialised call handling, cost effective solutions and the like. We never feature products that are not the best in class at least.

All our product choices in fact are based on the standards enumerated previously in this article. With the appearance of Avaya’s latest cloud system offering, we are happy to say that an ideal system now exists for small businesses who want to have the best internet based communications platform. Give our site a visit at https://www.candour.com.au/, email info@candour.com.au or call direct at 1300 651 350.

Qualities of a modern business phone system are being defined by new age qualities. These qualities taken together provide any given phone system an all-inclusive range. The qualities include:

The ability to choose or create a specialised solution to your unique business needs.

Being able to incorporate, connect to or work with technology, whether traditional, current or advanced.

Connect to the Internet.

Have high-end functions and compatible tools you can acquire to improve message delivery and quality.

Future-proofed for modern business.

How Do These 5 Qualities Form That One All-In Quality of Business Phones?

Enumerate all the qualities of modern telephone systems for business and these can dovetail to one single quality. This quality is possible with tech, like so many things available in the products or services markets today. It, the quality, is all-inclusive, incorporating a virtual host of purposes, tasks and functions for your business.

This total quality is something that is present on all leading products in the field. Typically, it will enable you to have the mentioned five qualities, which are themselves exceptional. Brands and distributors marketing units with the all-in quality are the most competitive in telecom markets.

Specialised Business Phone System Solutions

This section divides the haves and the have-nots in the industry. To explain, there are companies in telecom that can provide everything for its consumers. Many others are have-nots. Meaning they don’t have anything that isn’t priced (“elegantly” shall we say) as a product or service for customers.

For businesses, fair price is still what it is, a measure of trustworthiness and care for consumers. An example? Well, consider how some telcos are driving hard at campaigns for selling brand new phone systems for NBN readiness. Furthermore, they do it even when they can advise not to buy new ones and provide other solutions.

Trustworthy names in the trade of telephone solutions for business often use resources to provide consumers more with less. Thus, given the above example, your system at hand can be added to or revamped to meet changing demands. For instance, those who have old phones can be provided with cheap ATA adapters for NBN readiness.

Good news is that the reliable companies in the field can provide any kind of solution for telecom consumers today. This even for those who have old phone networks running through cabled copper wires.

How Business Phones on the Tech Stream Work

Tech paved the way for some of the most high-flying science fiction ideas in phone communications to become reality. Some ideas only took a few years to full realisation. And with real affordability, too. The best tech qualities for any business phone network include:

Integrated Communications – call, chat, connect, email, fax, get notified, send documents, or communicate in any way through integrated communications tools.

Mobile – the tech here is on a steep, upward-moving improvement curve. Businesses can often be judged according to how they handle or provide their mobile phone platforms and gadgets for mobile users.

Automation, call routing, CRM software and other features – service or product peripherals maximise your phone system use.

Admin portal – a most important feature for businesses, this allows you to monitor calls, to do analytics on the monitoring.

Conference feature – this is both an inter-office and business lifeline.

For older phone systems, what are called legacy networks, there will be some compatibility, network or connectivity problems. However, cables, jacks and software can address these.

The Internet and What it Gives Your Phones

There are still some disadvantages and awkward moments to VoIP and Hosted PBX systems. These run through the internet, which can lower voice quality, reception, speed, etc. However, even as this article is being written, more solutions to these disadvantages are being made available.

No one will deny the power of the internet and what this gives communications. The connectivity will cut down on cost, add to call volume and audience reach. Eventually it will be speedier on average, while the fastest call connections on the internet can be enhanced by services providers and software.

Also, the connectivity can mean you can sync and integrate hardware and computers into a network that is truly scalable. No matter the distance, no matter the time, this connection means being able to patch through to any staff member, branch, business or client. That means you can further add to efficiency by setting up a 24/7 office, and you don’t need too many personnel to handle this.

Why High-end Functionality for Phones is Always a Wise Choice Now

In terms of functionality, the most popular phone brands often offer enough choices for you. What people are searching for are high-end phone functions. These do not mean more expense or expensive products. What these functions are will often drive businesses.

These functions are so-called high-end because of advanced technology features, no more, no less. This does not necessarily mean more expense or cost. In fact, many tech features help save on costs for business phones.

Thus, any product being marketed that do not offer these functions may be ignored. For both users and manufacturers, the wisest choice is to choose to put in or have as many of these functions as possible. The tech is there to be used, and everyone wants to innovate because they can. These functions are linked to progressive technology for the Fourth Industrial revolution that is driven by AI.

Are Business Phones as Important Today as Before?

Some consider it an arguable point, but many believe in the power of businesses driven by phones. The rise of modern business was powered by telephone networks. With this in mind, it is no wonder many in America fondly call AT&T “Ma Bell.”

For this corporate giant, anything that rings, whistles or produces sound through audio equipment can be business communications. A basic thing, shall we say? It is because Scotch-American Alexander Graham Bell’s wondrous precepts of scientific discovery runs through his invention. And this invention is a primary basis of corporate business success in the modern world.

Cut to a reasonably recent invention for telecom like softphones. You can be sure Ma Bell has a line on these. In Graham Bell’s philosophy, the new thing is the grail. Furthermore, anything new should not only help science but also the public, including consumers. In fact, he invented the telephone through his primary work helping people with hearing problems. His creative intent was to improve and advance human communications in general.

The softphone is a transitional system.

Therefore, the evolution of phones for business can be rightly seen as true to the spirit of the original invention. Softphones are great for business, and this has helped maintain the telephone’s lead as a driver for business. However, there is more to this than meets the eye.

Bridging the Tech Gap on Your Business Phone System

Softphones can be run together with other things, mostly communications processes and platforms. It is a transitional gadget that is truly a phone and truly an online resource. Both these qualities bridge the gap for telecom networks or services providers and phone companies. There are of course other alternatives for bridging the tech gap.

The alternatives include providers that have flexible, tailored solutions for delivering qualities of modern telephone systems. This is where Candour Communications can come in for any business in Australia. Our expertise will view the gap for customers, the better to come up with solutions for them.

It takes real or dedicated expertise to see where these gaps are found and how they affect your business productivity. Ultimately, this will lead to solutions, which, for Candour, means fair and affordable ones. These solutions also follow client preference and need, which often make it complicated for bigger telcos to address the tech gap.

Candour was created based on the ability to really provide smaller businesses qualities of modern telephone systems they need. Our size matters here, because smaller operations focused on individual customer needs means a reliable means of closing the tech gap for customers.

“Don’t Hang Up on Me, I Have an Important Thing to Say”

All successful business calls are not necessarily made by the latest equipment or tech. In this sense, you need to have more, like great customer service reps. The latter is a human factor, the other is tech. Both must come together to make your business communications work.

Candour Communications is essentially concerned about leveling up the quality of business phone systems for small to medium businesses. Smaller businesses often have a not-unfounded fear of being hung up on. We are trying to change this perspective into, “You can call me at any convenient time and I will be ready to talk.”

This basically is about technology upgrades or transfers that do not cost too much or are too inconvenient. We not only know our tech, we know the lay of the land. The connection between both tech and culture is an important one. Our operations therefore include customer care that should banish the fear of anything regarding phone systems for smaller businessmen.

While we cannot prevent any caller from hanging up on our clients, good equipment and the regular care and maintenance to go with it is already a great confidence booster. Talk to us for the best phone system solutions tailor-fit to your budget and specifications.

We are currently updating our site to reach more folks. As luck would have it, we were looking through it for the purpose of cleaning up and reorganising. We chanced on almost forgotten Candour FAQs and their answers about NBN and subjects like business phones, telecom and business network solutions.

We asked ourselves, should we turn these into curated files? Because we’ve already picked out the stronger content elements and turned these up in the redesign. By necessity, the work is being rushed, and so we passed over these items.

Upon re-reading the FAQs, we realised these are good to go, but could not be easily integrated into the new website design. Sometimes people don’t know there is a modest but workable gold mine under their property, so to speak.

The beauty of it is in the discovery, and in our being able to share it with an audience as virtually ready-made blogs. Do check out our FAQs and page if they spark interest, or joy.

Following are the Q&As, which, aside from very few tweaks, are printed verbatim.

Can I use my old system with the NBN?

Yes! The NBN requires you to use Voice over IP or VoIP. Your system does not need to be a VoIP system or VoIP capable. Being technical (and not just sales people) we can install and implement VoIP converters that make VoIP lines behave exactly like standard telephone lines. So, nothing needs to change on your telephone system.

I have a relatively new phone system. Can that do VoIP?

Quite possibly. We can assess your existing telephone system and see if that can connect directly with the NBN. Some systems require additional hardware and some systems require manufacturer licenses. We can determine exactly what is required and provide that solution for you.

Will my telephone numbers need to change when converting to VoIP?

No, you will keep your existing phone numbers. There are certain advantages of VoIP over standard lines. You can have all outbound calls show your advertised number and call forwarding your lines can be done remotely via a web page.

Do I need to move to the NBN immediately?

No, there is a cut-off time of 18 months. No doubt other sales guys will say it will be cut-off anytime soon but they are not being honest.

Here’s more: So, the NBN is being installed into your area and telcos are sending you baffling information about what to do. Most will say that you need to change your telephone system as yours is not compatible with the NBN. This is not true!

Moreover, these same telcos will tell you that you must connect up to the NBN now because your telephone lines are going to be cut off immediately. Another lie!

The people that tell you this are simply trying to make a sale. They do not care what they sell you. And typically what they sell you will generally be something that does not suit your business requirements.

We at Candour get sick when we hear about these things happening to our industry. Supposedly legitimate sales reps are trying to force honest businesses into spending money on something that they don’t really need.

[Additional facts: the reason why our “Check NBN” button figures prominently on our Front Page banner is obvious. The roll-out, as of this date, is still ongoing. There is still a large percentage of the population readying themselves for this in their respective areas.

We are one with other honest telephone solutions providers in wanting to serve the public well. The cut-off time of 18 months applies after the date NBN is available on any area. The answer above is still very relevant in every respect.

We chose the article because it’s a well-written one that is at or near the median spot on the roll-out schedule.]

More Candour FAQs

The above are it for some of the most urgent questions in Australian telecom today. The answers are short and to the point. Plus, Candour offers some significant and effective solutions (fair and honest ones) for consumer enquiries. But, as a banana-bending Bushie from back of Bourke would say, “There’s more in the billy.”

We’ve decided to split these added questions and carry the remainder over to a second (or even third) part of a series. The following questions are more detailed, but they are as relevant as the first ones for their respective fields. These take time to cross and recross to other, related fields, and are more informative in that sense.

We will add two more Q&As, so read on.

What is ISDN?

An Integrated Services Digital Network (ISDN) is a telecommunications technology that enables the transmission of digital data over standard phone lines. With that being said, it can be used for voice calls as well as data transfer.

ISDN can operate over copper based systems and allows the transmission of digital data over the telecommunication networks. Typically, ordinary copper based systems provide higher data speeds as well as better quality than analogue transmission. The ISDN transmission networks and its specifications will therefore provide a set of protocols that enable the set up, maintenance and completion of calls.

The integrated digital network provides a number of significant advantages over analogue systems. As a result, it enables two simultaneous telephone calls to be made over the same line. Hence, faster call connection. It typically takes a second to make connections rather than the much longer delays experienced using analogue based systems.

So with it, data can be sent more reliably and faster than in an analogue system. Also, noise, distortion, echoes and crosstalk are virtually eliminated. This is really great for business phone systems. Furthermore, the digital stream can carry any form of data from voice to faxes and Internet web pages to data files – thus the “integrated services” part of ISDN.

How does a cloud phone system work?

Hosted PBX is now the preferred system for remote workers and modern businesses.

First of all, a cloud-based phone system is typically a Hosted PBX system that runs through the internet, rather than on traditional telephone lines. This is why cloud-based phone systems are also known as internet-based phone systems or as VoIP (Voice Over Internet Protocol).

Also, cloud-based system routes all phone calls through a simple internet connection. This allows any business to avoid the expensive hardware, infrastructure and consistent maintenance that is needed for a traditional telephone line phone system.

Pros and Cons

The main advantages that a cloud-based phone system has over traditional phone systems are:

You only need a broadband internet connection to start making calls for your business.

Usually results in cheaper phone bills.

VoIP doesn’t require expensive hardware as mentioned earlier.

Cloud-based phone systems are portable and accessible through mobile applications on smartphones.

Disadvantages are present but we have honest solutions for these:

There are some upfront costs in getting the proper equipment setup. However, these costs are quite small compared to the money that your business will start saving.

Your broadband connection affects that quality of your phone calls. If your Internet connection is currently somewhat shaky, your call quality could be bad or may drop a lot of calls. We can certainly assist you with internet connection.

You might be daunted by the tech with which the cloud gives these systems. But these however are quite simple and intuitive. The only things you need to have is an open mind and a willingness to learn about them. And these shouldn’t take too much time or effort for you and your co-workers to learn.

Far and above other concerns in the telecom business, we have seen how the industry in general is no longer customer-oriented. Will the bias against customers slide down or pull up? That is our own FAQ, something that we are committed to answer in the positive.

Not too long ago, people expected their computers to include phone functions, without using any telecom devise. That was an expectation that had good basis in fact.

Today, software turns your computer into a fully functional phone. This would be stronger, faster and more useful than traditional phones. It is called a softphone because it runs on software and calls are made via a data network (i.e. the internet). And, as you know how this enables more functions, speed and flexibility.

Without Googling its details, imagine a phone interface which you manipulate through keyboard, keypad or mouse. It works across all computing devices and phone systems. You can use it on desktops, laptops, mobile, tablets and even web versions that are accessible through your browser.

How Softphones are Used Today

The internet is closely allied to voice telecoms, and it didn’t take long for phone software applications to become an important business tool. Business process outsourcing can benefit from this and can either integrate with inhouse VOiP systems or operate with a cloud based system.

With the softphone installed and with connectivity to the internet, the remote worker can make and receive calls as if in the office. Outbound calls show or display the business’s phone number to the remote party, not the individual’s mobile number. Calling from any location is easy: from the home kitchen to a coffee shop.

Office workers simply need to connect a headset to their laptop or PC to use the business telephone system. The solution is perfect for offices that have a hot-desking arrangement for its staff. Some staff may prefer to retain a physical desk handset and this is fine. But the softphones and physical handsets can work across the same system.

Calls are the lifeline of any modern business. We can give you the capability to run with the best options in phone tech and equipment. Candour Communications stands ready to take your business into the NBN-ready future. Talk to us today if you want the details on these options.

Share article:

Working from home is entirely workable with an up to date business phone system based on Hosted PBX. This can cost as little as $55 per month. Yes, you read it right, and this is a thing you can avail only from select telecom companies.

Connectivity when it comes to VoIP and internet business resources have “techie” written all over them. The way its seen is usually daunting to businessmen themselves. However, there are several levels of use, of combining various resources which can actually help the budget.

You can earn more and save more, especially if you have a low cost internet connection. Now, finding this may not be so easy when you actually start looking, not with so many add-ons that ISPs and telcos give you. But low cost connectivity is a thing that is essential to any home-based work.

More and more people are turning into homebound professionals. Most relate good to better results, because they have better flexibility when it comes to practical work. Management also gets lower overhead in terms of maintaining a fully-equipped office to support staff members.

Why Hosted PBX is Ideally Suited for Successful Home-Based Jobs

Hosted PBX or cloud-based PBX is a flexible system that guarantees connection even when job locations are scattered. This is because the host, which is the service provider, has a centralised, off-site system working for clients. This system provides:

A stable and reliable internet service – as mentioned above, this is an essential, especially if affordable. All your features and call platforms are “hosted” at the service provider location. A strong, reliable service should give you good quality in video calls, social media messaging, and the like.

A way to take good advantage of your unified phone network – integrated communications is key to make every communications device work together in a system. Hosted PBX enables your office to run a unified network by sharing the exact same network. Thus everyone that needs to be in the loop can stay informed. Every individual team member works on the same page all the time.

Can make customised or tailored phone systems work better – you can add on functions and gadgets as you need or want. You can mix and match brands with good hosted PBX services, without the long term or locked up contracts. Plus, these services have built in lower rates, usually flat fees for local, national or international calls.

The innovative uses of computing devises integrated enables you and your company to have best practise. You can do this even with many off-site or remote locations when it comes to call management and using business numbers.

Telecommuting from Home Often Leads to Better Productivity

First off, working out of a home office means less stress for certain employees, and this fact is based on published studies. Usually it involves a business phone system, and thus most jobs done from home are classed as telecommuting jobs. Telecommuting from home is preferred work for connected individuals because they get more out their time.

The work hours here are flexible, and these will lead to better productivity. Professionals who are used to an office will find the freedom liberating. This freedom enables them to creatively use the ideal personal work ethic they have developed.

The main reasons why people work at home are related to more urgent or business-related concerns. (But many prefer the option after tasting its freedom.) Most produce quality work in their personal spaces. Their reasons, based on statistical studies, include:

They can be single or working young parents.

They live farther from their offices, most needing an hour or more to commute to work.

Their business is friendlier or more workable with remote settings.

With regards to connectivity, there are several issues remote, home-based professionals will contend with, given settings in Australia. These settings include add on spending.

Things Do Work if You Remove Add On Spending on Telco or ISP Services and Business Phones

So many ISP or telco services come in package deals. These will typically itemise a mix of essential and non-essential options. Mostly, these packages are based on what companies think consumers want or should have. Cutting out non-essentials might be somewhat confusing for some consumers.

Established companies in this field may have their own motives when it comes to add ons. We shall not discuss those in this article. We will only mention in passing that the motives for some companies offering more add ons are based on survival, and for others, maximum profitability.

Add ons are part of most deals, and these include spending on technicians. These, for companies employing them, could be part of an installation or maintenance and repair process. However, there are deals out there where technician fees are not included. These should be the ones your company should be looking out for.

These deals mostly processes where everything is taken care of by one-off fees. Cut out a good fraction of the $300 or so average for technician fees from one-off prices, and you get an idea about how such deals save money. Actually, companies providing these deals cover all the essentials, and these should work for any remote professional need.

With NBN already available, hosted PBX can be as powerful, fast and reliable both for offices and homes working in combination as work settings.

You need not sign a new contract for your telephone system

Too many businesses get caught in the trap of signing a phone line contract with their telephone company in this season of NBN readiness and compliance. Or if they require or want a line into existing ISDN and PSTN networks. This is not necessary, and if you’re already a customer, this is simply their way of locking you in to long term obligations you cannot get out of easily.

An initial contract may be for new telephone lines if there is an installation fee being amortised across the length of the contract. For example, there is a large cost for installing a new ISDN service and so there is generally a contract period required for this.

For new PSTN services you are normally required to pay the installation fee upfront, so why should there be a contract period?

Not that these types of lines really matter anymore because, with the advent of NBN we are all moving to VoIP.

Now, with VoIP….unless the a telco is amortising equipment or installation fees across a contract period, there should be no need for a contract.

There are many telecommunications companies that have the audacity to insist on re-signing a contract at the end of the initial contract. This makes it worse for customers, and again, simply not necessary.

If your supplier says that the contract is necessary to lock in the call rates, then shop around. There will be better rates and they come with better service.

If you are having issues with your Telecom provider, call Candour Communications on 1300 651 350 and get us to help you sort out the best solution for your business.

What is PSTN?

The Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN) refers to the international telephone system that uses copper wires to carry analog voice data. It consists of a collection of individual telephones that are hardwired to a public exchange.

The Public Switched Telephone Network was formerly known simply as the public telephone network.

The original concept was that the telephone exchanges are arranged so that if a call cannot be handled in a local cluster, it is passed to one higher up for onward routing. This reduced the number of connecting trunks required between operators over long distances and also kept local traffic separate.
